The Real Story • Dedicated to Chabela & Rita

Born in the Woods, Made for a Little Greyhound Named Rita

How a 40-kilometer trail running partner, a heartbreaking loss, and an ancient puppy-pile instinct inspired the ultimate cave bed.

The Trail Runner in the Woods

The real story of Rita's Burrow Beds doesn’t begin in a sewing studio. It begins deep in the forest, running dirt trails through the trees with a tiny, fearless Italian Greyhound named Chabela.

Chabela lived in the woods. Even though I was not officially her owner, the connection between us was immediate and undeniable. Every single time I arrived, she would recognize me from a distance, vibrating with excitement. To Chabela, there was nothing in the world more exhilarating than heading into the wild woods together.

We would run for three, sometimes four hours—covering thirty, even forty kilometers across rugged forest trails. For a dog so delicate and small, she was an unstoppable force of nature. She was fiercely loyal, always tuned to my footsteps, always waiting if the trail twisted out of sight, and completely present in every stride.

"We would run for 30 or 40 kilometers through the woods. She was tiny, but she had the biggest heart on the trail. She always waited for me."

A Mother’s Legacy: Finding Rita

One day, the heartbreaking news came. Chabela had given birth too quickly and too young—first three puppies, and then five more. Eight fragile lives were brought into the world, but the strain was too much for her tiny body. Chabela passed away.

Losing my loyal trail running partner was devastating. But when I looked at the vulnerable litter left behind without a mother, I knew I had to step in. I helped care for the puppies, and out of that litter, I adopted a tiny two-year-old girl named Rita.

Rita wasn’t just Chabela's puppy; she was a complete carbon copy of her mother. The exact same luminous, soulful eyes, the same graceful, arching frame, and that unmistakable spark of loyal companionship.

The Missing Puppy Pile & The Cave Instinct

Bringing Rita home gave her a safe, loving new life. But within a few days, I noticed a quiet, heartbreaking reality: she had been separated from the constant warmth of cuddling with her sisters.

Italian Greyhounds have virtually zero body fat and paper-thin single coats. They get cold fast, trembling at the slightest draft. Historically, sighthounds and greyhounds sought shelter in deep, enclosed caves and dens to survive the chill. And as puppies, they rely entirely on the collective warmth of the "puppy pile"—sleeping tightly cuddled against one another.

Rita desperately sought that sensation in our home. She would frantically dig under bedsheets, bury herself beneath sofa pillows, and tuck her nose completely into heavy blankets just to feel covered, warm, and enclosed. But ordinary blankets were flawed: they tangled around her, slipped off during the night, or trapped too much heat with no easy way out.

Ancient Cave Den

Short-haired dogs naturally crave a 360° enclosed sanctuary where drafts cannot touch them.

Self-Regulation

When they get warm, they need the freedom to climb out and sprawl comfortably on top.

Sewing the Bed: Two Beds in One

I decided to take matters into my own hands and sew a bed specifically engineered for Rita’s unique needs:

  • Four Substantial Layers: Not thin decorative felt, but four continuous layers of plush anti-pill fleece or breathable cotton twill that hold body warmth without trapping clamminess.
  • The Open Nose-Lift Entry: Zipper-free and pet-safe. Rita could easily lift the top flap with her snout and tuck herself in completely without crying for help.
  • Two Beds in One: The breakthrough feature. When Rita was cold, she would dive inside the pocket cave. But when she got too warm, she had the freedom to simply climb out and sprawl across the top cushions like a plush lounger to cool off.

The very first night Rita had her bed, she walked up to it, nudged the opening with her nose, turned three happy circles inside the pocket, and let out a deep, contented sigh. For the first time since leaving her sisters, she was completely warm, safe, and sound asleep.

Our 90% Giving Promise: Saving Shelter Dogs with Wellitas.org

Saving Rita changed my life forever. But knowing that thousands of homeless street dogs are still out there—cold, injured, and without a safe place to sleep—made one thing clear: Rita's Burrow Beds could never be just about selling beds. It had to be about saving lives.

That is why we made an uncompromising commitment: 90% of all profits from every bed sold go directly to supporting dog shelters, rescuing homeless dogs from the street, and funding adoptions.

We proudly collaborate with Wellitas.org in Mexico—an incredible rescue organization dedicated to taking vulnerable street dogs off dangerous roads, providing life-saving surgeries, rehabilitating them with nutritious food and loving shelter, and placing them into screened, caring forever adoptive homes.

Every time your dog crawls into their warm burrow bed, you can take comfort knowing that 90% of the profits from that bed directly gave medical care, nourishing food, and a warm shelter bed to a homeless dog waiting for their second chance.
